CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

I woke up the next morning, bleary-eyed and exhausted, and, for a moment, thought it had all been a bad dream. Then I groaned and turned over as it all came back to me. No, it hadn’t been a nightmare—I really had been skulking around the Cotswolds Manor Hotel dressed in nothing but a towel, and nearly had got arrested with the Old Biddies for unlawful trespassing. It was a miracle that we had managed to escape Inspector Pratt’s notice and then get down to the lobby and out to my car with no further mishap. I’d half expected the American couple to call Reception and complain about being harassed by a crazy girl in a wet towel and four nosy old ladies.

Sitting up wearily in bed, I yawned and rubbed my eyes. I wondered why Muesli’s warm little body wasn’t curled up next to me, then I remembered that I had left her at my parents’ house last night. It would probably be nice for her to spend the day there anyway, and enjoy being spoiled by my parents.

Thinking of my parents reminded me suddenly that I had offered to stop off at the lawyers’ offices this morning to ask about my mother’s iPad. I sighed, regretting my impulsive offer—I could have had another hour in bed!—but I forced myself to get up and head to a hot shower and breakfast. An hour later, feeling a lot more human, I entered the offices of Sexton, Lovell & Billingsley and went up to the receptionist.

“Can I help you?” She gave me a cool, professional smile.

“My mother was in here last Friday to see Gavin Sexton. She thinks she may have left her iPad here. I was wondering if you might have seen it?”

The girl frowned. “I haven’t seen anything out here…”

“Oh, she might have left it in his office. Is Mr Sexton in yet?”

“Yes, he has just arrived in his office.”

I put on my best imitation of my mother and said breezily, “I’ll tell you what—I’ll just pop along to his office and ask him, shall I?”

“But—”

“Don’t worry, I won’t be a moment,” I said gaily. Before she could argue further, I hurried down the hall and knocked on the door with the sign: “GAVIN SEXTON”.
